Bourne is saying goodbye to Village Ski and Sports in Pocasset and saying hello to Paine's Patio. Replacing Village Ski & Sports is Paine's Patio. Owned by Douglas H. Shearer of Falmouth, Paine's Patio features fine casual and outdoor furnishings.
Paine's Patio is an offshoot of Paine's Furniture, a well-known Boston-based furniture company established in 1835 by the Paine and Shearer families. Paine's Furniture closed its doors about three years ago due to a decline in sales.
Mr. Shearer decided to revive the family business with his father, Daniel H. Shearer, also of Falmouth. While the son focuses on patio furniture, the elder Mr. Shearer is launching Nautical and Nice, which features nautical giftware and accessories, including model ships, bird baths, pictures, lamps, clocks and other indoor and outdoor items.
"This is my and my father's effort to keep the family business going. There's a tremendous family history here," the younger Mr. Shearer said from his shop Monday.
Paine's Patio began moving into a unit next door to the ski shop last month and will begin selling furniture later this month. Mr. Shearer said he plans to sell furniture out of both units after Village Ski and Sports moves, with a grand opening scheduled for the second week in April.
"I'm really sad to see Mr. Blanchard go. I mean, we do a lot of skiing and he's the only place around here that does what he does. And, he's a very nice man. It's sad," said Mr. Shearer's wife, Kristin Shearer. Mrs. Shearer is helping with administrative aspects of the new business.
Mr. Shearer is also in the midst of regulatory review to construct a new patio furniture store on the corner of Route 151 and Sandwich Road in Falmouth. Plans include construction of a 7,500 square-foot building on an 81,000 square-foot lot just 130 feet north of Little Jenkins Pond.
The Falmouth Conservation Commission is currently reviewing the project. At issue is concern over how the proposed project will impact wetlands and rare milkweed near the property.
Because review of the project has been ongoing for more than a year and a half, far longer than he had anticipated, Mr. Shearer decided to temporarily relocate to Bourne while awaiting a decision on the proposed Falmouth building.
He said he plans to keep the patio shop open in Bourne for at least a year, since construction of the new building would not likely be completed before next winter. Depending on how things go this first year, Mr. Shearer said he may also retain one unit in the Pocasset Crossing plaza after the Falmouth store opens.
